1.<\/span><\/span> About \u00a0the \u00a0author\u00a0: \u00a0Wang \u00a0Zaijin<\/span><\/span>\u738b\u5728\u6649 <\/span><\/span>( ?- 1643) was born in Tai Cang, Jiangsu Province (<\/span><\/span>\u6c5f\u82cf\u592a\u4ed3<\/span><\/span>), and became <\/span><\/span>jinshi<\/i><\/span><\/span> \u9032\u58eb <\/span><\/span>in 1592. He was then affected to the ministry of transport and irrigation (<\/span><\/span>\u5de5\u90e8<\/span><\/span>). In 1600, he became deputy inspector (<\/span><\/span>\u526f\u4f7f<\/span><\/span>) in Fujian. In 1607, he was transferred to the province of Huguang (<\/span><\/span>\u6e56\u5e7f\u526f\u4f7f<\/span><\/span>). From 1610 through to 1616, he was stationed in Zhejiang. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2 . The book : <\/span><\/span> Yue Juan<\/i><\/span><\/span>\u8d8a\u954c <\/span><\/span>was published in 1611<\/span><\/span>\uff08\u4e07\u5386\u4e09\u5341\u4e5d\u5e74<\/span><\/span>), while Wang Zaijin was on duty in Zhejiang Province. The book is part of the compilation called \u201cSiku jinhui shu congkan\u201d <\/span><\/span>\u56db\u5eab\u7981\u6bc0\u66f8\u53e2\u520a <\/span><\/span>(<\/span><\/span>Books<\/span><\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Listed as \u201cTo Be Banned or Destroyed\u201d (by<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the<\/span><\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Editors of<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the<\/span><\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Complete<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Collection) of the<\/span><\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Four Treasures<\/span><\/span>), published by Beijing chubanshe in 2000. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span><\/span>Yue Juan<\/i><\/span><\/span> relates observations and political proposals made by the author between 1610 and 1611. In particular, it includes five records of court cases against merchants (and others) trading with Japan at the end of the Ming dynasty. I choose 3 of these 5 cases, which reveal the complex mechanism of pooling capital and cargoes before venturing for overseas trade. They also describe in a very vivid way the role of local administration in terms of a still prohibited trade with Japan. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

3. The \u00a0context : \u00a0the \u00a0maritime \u00a0trade. \u00a0 From 1567 (<\/span><\/span>\u9686\u5e86\u5143\u5e74<\/span><\/span>) on, the central government lifted the ban on maritime trade (<\/span><\/span>\u6d77 \u7981<\/span><\/span>) in the Fujian Province. Although merchants obtained the permission to undertake overseas commercial operations, trade with Japan was still prohibited. (See <\/span><\/span>Dong Xi yang kao<\/i><\/span><\/span>\u4e1c\u897f\u6d0b\u8003<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>juan<\/i><\/span><\/span> 7, pp.\u00a0131-132). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
